Rapper Jay-Z talks about his first book, Decoded, in an interview with Dr. Cornel West and Paul Holdengraber at the New York Public Library (November 15, 2010).
In the final moments of the interview a core issue of values between Dr. West and Jay-Z reveals itself. Rubbing his left eye just after bobbing his head to Jay's hit single “Empire State of Mind”, Dr. West responds…
“you know, as an anti-imperialist I've always been suspicious of this 'empire state' talk… you know what I mean? I'm in deep solidarity with my indigenous brothers and sisters whose land they actually subjugated.
But, just on the musical tip… [pause, then a laugh from the audience]... that's a beautiful song, man.”
The two men laugh heartily as they shake hands.
