On March 25, 2003 I published an entry about a blogger from Iraq named Salam Pax. Well, it turns out that the 29-year old author of this blog is hitting the big time. His entries have won him a column in the London Guardian and he has written his first book.
His most recent entry goes as follows:
Still in Jordan, will be back in baghdad by thursday.
did I tell you that while waiting for the BBC Today show Jack Straw was in the same room with me, he was waiting for his turn to be put infront of a mic. It was probably one of the strangest moments in my life ever. I kept looking over the rim of my coffee mug, just making sure that it is actually him sitting in front of me.
The online Diary of Salam Pax, I think, may become one of the few dependable narratives that future historians will refer to when documenting the 2003 Iraq war. Particularly in times of crisis, you never know what the importance of recording your experience will be. One of the added advantages of online diaries is that thousands of people can learn about your exprience as you go through it. Dearraed.blogspot.com represents, I think, the greater potential of blogging (i.e. the potential to go beyond trivial chatter and uncreative ruminations).
Cheers,
JA
